Tesla Guitarist Gets a Unique Epiphone Flying-V
Epiphone's Cara Hogan presents Dave Rude his new Epiphone Flying-V.
Tesla has been on the road with Def Leppard and Styx this summer. The band's live show is receiving rave reviews and on August 18, we found out why when the tour stopped at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist and long-time Epiphone player Dave Rude is playing better than ever, guitarist Frank Hannon is also in top form, drummer Troy Luccketta and bassist Brian Wheat are locked in and super tight, and vocalist Jeff Keith continues to defy father time, somehow sounding even better than he did back in 1981 when the band first formed. This is what a rock and roll band is supposed to sound like!
Dave Rude joined Tesla in 2006 after Frank Hannon "discovered" the Oakland based guitarist on Myspace. Hannon was so impressed with Rude's playing that he offered him a spot in the Frank Hannon band. Things went well and that gig ended up being an audition for Tesla. Rude first toured with Tesla on the 2006 "Electric Summer Jam" tour and has been a permanent member of the line up since.
Epiphone has been privileged to work with Dave Rude for several years. Epi instruments in his collection include an original Alleykat, a TV Silver Explorer Pro (both shown in the live Bridgestone Arena photos below), a Sheraton-II, a Masterbilt EF-500RCCE, and more. So when Dave mentioned that he'd like to have a Flying-V and even had a design idea based on an old Tom Petty T-Shirt, Epiphone R&D went to work and put together a one-of-a-kind guitar to present to Dave in Nashville. Inspired by that vintage t-shirt, the guitar features a white finish with a red pickguard and a white phenolic fingerboard. Dave was super-excited and plans to incorporate the guitar into Tesla's live show soon.
