Epiphone's critically acclaimed PRO-1 Collection is the easiest and fastest way to learn guitar and has inspired thousands of new students around the world. The idea for the PRO-1 series began with the simple premise of trying to understand why new players lose confidence when learning guitar and to design an instrument that addressed those issues. Epiphone also consulted with our signature artists and luthiers about the kinds of custom features they need in their day-to-day instruments on stage and in the studio. The result is the PRO-1 Acoustic Collection steel and nylon string guitars that are a joy to own and easy to play. PRO-1 instruments combine a century of Epiphone and Gibson experience in choosing the best tonewoods, building with time proven construction methods, and incorporating the crucial details that separete an affordable guitar from a cheap one guitar.
Epiphone Innovation
All PRO-1 instruments feature classic tonewoods such as Mahogany, Cedar, and Spruce--the very wood styles that Epiphone has been using for acoustic instruments for nearly a century. PRO-1 instruments also include PRO-1 innovations like an EZ-Profile™ Neck Profile that easy on your hands over long practice sessions, JumboPRO™ Frets so the strings are easy to press down when learning chords, PRO-Ease™ fingerboard lubricant for a smooth "feel" when learning to pick and bend strings, and Epiphone Ultra-Light Strings that will help new players gradually build callouses on their finger tips.

PRO-1 instruments also come with a Dual-Action Truss Rod for fast and accurate intonation adjustments, a GraphTech® Nut for better resonance and tone between the bridge and the body, a glued-in neck joint so the instrument sings out as a single piece of wood, and Custom PRO-Prietary™ Bracing underneath the guitar's "top" so the instrument the instrument has a strong and even volume as it vibrates from being strummed and picked.

Building A PRO-1

Designing an instrument that could satisfy discerning guitar players as well as students required a merging of two separate philosophies.

"For us on the engineering side, we immediately saw that this could work," recalled Richard Akers of Epiphone R&D. "Some of the features required some unique thinking. Any of them on their own would have been a notable improvement on a guitar. But when you add them all up, you really have a story to tell. Every year, we've brought new innovations to our line of instruments--better hardware, better pickups, better machine heads. So, the PRO-1 was a logical next step."

Scott Harrison, a longtime member of the Epiphone R&D team, also brought a unique perspective to the creation of the PRO-1 Collection. For the last decade, Scott has worked to build up the company's historic collection of acoustic flattop and archtop guitars including the priceless Masterbilt line from the 1930s.
"When we consider reissues, we'll look inside vintage models to note bracing techniques and make measurements, and it's easy to spot the nuances of the various craftsmen who worked on them," said Harrison. "One aspect of the PRO-1 series that required a bit of extra thought was the development of the EZ-String™ Bridge," said Harrison. "We went through several iterations of it before we settled on one that we felt accomplished our objectives of providing the consumer with easy maintenance and classic looks as well as reliability in production."

"As engineers, naturally, we enjoyed discussing the various bracing options available for improving the PRO-1 guitars," continued Akers. "We very quickly came up with a solution that accentuated the tone of the guitar without deviating uncomfortably far from our tradition, which was what we were trying to achieve. Our Custom PRO-Prietary™ Bracing is based on a traditional X brace but we opened it up a bit. The bracing around the sound hole uses taller bracing than what is typically used in an effort to unify the vibrating plane on the surface of the guitar."

Now with almost 30 years of experience of building instruments in the modern world, creating an instrument that was truly “easy to play” but still professional was a logical next step. And from the earliest factory samples, the R&D team was thrilled with the results and possibilities.

"It was immediately clear to us that these PRO-1 guitars were real instruments," said Akers. "We were able to get there pretty quick. We came up with something that we were very pleased with tonally and certainly for the price, you get an excellent guitar that sounds great, is built to last, and is also easy to use in every way possible."
Learning Guitar Just Got Fun Again
The PRO-1 is a terrific first step into the world of playing guitar. Every PRO-1 instrument offers a solution to the typical roadblocks that new students face when taking on a guitar for the first time.
PRO-1 instruments offer:
  • Less fatigue. The EZ-Profile™ neck is designed so students can easily form chords without feeling fatigued.
  • Effortless Fretting. Epiphone JumboPRO™ frets make fretting notes and chords seem effortless. JumboPRO™ frets are taller and wider than smaller frets. When you push down a string, it’s easier to make string contact with the fret with less hand fatigue and finger friction.
  • Shorter is Easier. Scale length is the distance from the saddle to the nut. The shorter the scale length, the “looser” the strings feel. Because the PRO-1’s scale length is almost 1” shorter than most acoustic guitars, the strings are under less tension so you don’t have to press hard to get good tone. And since the frets are closer together forming chords is easier on a PRO-1!
  • Make friction fiction. String and fingerboard friction slows your playing. Our PRO-Ease™ string and fingerboard coating provides a sleek, smooth action with reduced string noise.
  • No pain, no gain? Not true! Epiphone believes in “no pain.” Every PRO-1 is set-up and equipped with Epiphone Ultra-Light strings.
  • Easy action. With Epiphone’s Dual-Action truss rod, you can adjust the neck in both directions which not only stabilizes the neck but also makes set-up easier and more precise.

PRO-1 Acoustic

The PRO-1 is a dreadnought style acoustic guitar with a classic profile known for incredible volume and tonal range. While traditional-sized dreadnoughts can be difficult for a new player to get used to, the PRO-1 has a reduced body depth which makes it easy to hold for long hours of playing. The PRO-1’s shorter scale neck has an EZ-Profile™ neck shape which makes learning chords easier on small hands. PRO-Ease™ Lubricant also makes the neck feel smooth and “worn in” on your fingers while the JumboPRO™ frets make it easy to hold down Epiphone’s custom light gauge strings.
The PRO-1 comes with Epiphone Deluxe tuners which have 18:1 ratio tuning gears that help make finding the right pitch quick and intuitive. Ordinary tuners typically have only a 14:1 ratio which makes fine tuning difficult as the string never quite settles in the right spot. The greater precision found in PRO-1 tuners make it easier to find the right pitch and stay there.

The PRO 1’s new EZ-String™ bridge doesn’t use bridge pins which are difficult to remove and difficult to get in place--not to mention easy to lose!) Changing a string and getting it in tune on the PRO-1 is fast and easy. What are you waiting for? See your Authorized Dealer for details today!
